Overview of basic techniques in management of small animal trauma

1. Introduction

Basic techniques in fracture management are available in the long bone modules of dog and cat. They follow the AO principles of fracture management.

Some aim to optimize the content setup, eg, plate preparation. Other basic techniques support learners in more detail and include OSapp simulations and videos.

Find below the links to the general basic techniques (open access) and the module specific collections.

To access all advanced, fracture specific treatments, become an AO Vet member!

2. General basic techniques

The basic technique of Cortical lag screw insertion contains 8 OSapp simulations and 1 video. It is linked in all long bone modules.

Cerclage wires technique is linked in the diaphyseal modules of the humerus, femur, and tibia.

Plating principles cover the following plating modalities:

  • Neutralization (protection)
  • Compression
  • Bridging
  • Buttress (antiglide)

To further demonstrate the principles, this page contains 16 OSapp simulations and 2 videos.

It is linked in most of the long bone modules and includes links to the following pages:

3. Module specific basic techniques

Some basic techniques are module specific, eg, showing anatomical specific illustrations. These principle techniques are collected in each module (follow the links below for dog modules; AO VET members only). For access to fracture specific, advanced techniques, see the corresponding fracture types in each anatomical module.
