This injury typically results from catching the toe against an object while barefoot or in sandals.

Hallux - Intraarticular partial shear fracture of the proximal phalanx

Clinical signs and imaging

The clinical picture is one of pain and swelling of the toe.

The fracture is best seen on plain AP and oblique radiographs.
