Nonoperative fracture management

Stall rest for a minimum of 12 weeks with limited hand-walking depending on the horse’s comfort.
NSAID’s are used as needed. In foals and weanlings anti-ulcer medications are also indicated.
Radiographs should be taken at 8 weeks to assess healing and determine further exercise instructions.
Fracture healing is typically 4-6 months depending on the type of fracture and age of the animal.
