Parasagittal fractures of the patella are variable in size. The smaller fragments tend to originate at the attachment of the medial fibrocartilage of the patella and likely represent avulsion fractures.
Larger parasagittal fractures can be minimally (left) or markedly (right) displaced depending on whether or not the patellar fascia is intact.
Femoropatellar joint effusion is typically present.
Lameness is usually moderate to severe.
The fracture is best seen on the tangential view, but may be present on a lateral to medial projection.
