Distal fractures

Distal fractures of the patella are generally small in size. Femoropatellar joint effusion is typically present.
Usually lameness is mild to moderate, but not severe.
Fragmentation of the distal patella is seen occasionally after medial patellar desmotomy for upward fixation of the patella.
The fragment is best seen on a lateral to medial radiographic projection.
