Implant removal

1. Plate removal

Plate removal is sometimes advisable.

It is recommended in the presence or evidence of:

  • Pain or discomfort caused by the implant
  • Implant loosening
  • Signs of infection related to the implant
  • Stress shielding

Some surgeons prefer to remove all plates in growing patients.

2. Intramedullary or cross-pin removal

Pin removal is recommended in the presence or evidence of:

  • Pain or discomfort caused by the implant
  • Implant loosening
  • Signs of infection related to the implant

Some surgeons prefer to remove pins in growing patients.

The pin can also be removed to dynamize the stabilization to accelerate bone healing. The same approach can be used with external skeletal fixators to slowly dynamize and accelerate bone healing.
