23-A2   Simple extraarticular fracture of the distal radius

General considerations

23-A2 is an extraarticular simple fracture of the distal radius and ulna.

Extraarticular simple distal radial and ulnar fracture in the dog

Etiology

Generally, this fracture is associated with a traumatic event. Toy breeds are more prone to this kind of fracture compared to large breed dogs.

In immature patients the fracture may involve the growth plate.

Clinical signs

Clinical signs observed for 23-A2 fractures are:

  • Pain
  • Lameness
  • Crepitus
  • Swelling
  • Carpal joint instability
Note: Instability is the result of either the ulnar fracture itself or damage to the substance of the lateral collateral ligament. It is extremely unusual to see both in the same patient.

Imaging

Craniocaudal and mediolateral views of the antebrachium are needed.
