Fracture distal to the tibial component and cement mantle

General considerations

These fractures are similar to tibial fractures where there is no prosthesis in place.

They are classified by UCPF as V.4-C.

Distant to the implant and cement mantle

Etiology

Commonly these occur following a simple fall from standing height.

Occasionally, more active patients might sustain a high energy fracture.

 

Clinical signs

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Deformity
  • Need to exclude open fracture and compartment syndrome

Imaging

Plain x-ray is usually sufficient.
