Fracture around a stable tibial component with good bone stock

General considerations

Commonly occur around the stem of the tibial component.

These fractures are classified by UCPF as V.4-B1.

Stable component, good bone quality

Etiology

Simple fall.

Clinical signs

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Deformity

Imaging

Plain X-rays remain the first line of investigation.

CT scan can be used to assess the size and position of fragments, implant stability, and bone stock.

Comparison with previous X-rays is useful.
