31-M/7   Avulsion of the greater or lesser trochanter

Avulsion fractures of the greater and/or lesser trochanter usually occur during periods of rapid growth when the physis is very active.

This injury pattern is associated with sporting activities, including:

  • Soccer
  • Basketball
  • Handball
  • High jump
  • Hurdles

Avulsion of the lesser trochanter is more frequent, especially in athletes. The initial displacement of the fragment can be small, but may increase because of the pull of the psoas tendon.
