Wedge or multifragmentary extraarticular fracture

Extraarticular wedge or multifragmentary metaphyseal fractures are classified by the AO/OTA as 41A3 fractures.

They are high-energy injuries usually associated with considerable soft-tissue trauma. They are very unstable and typically require surgical stabilization. Because of soft-tissue injury, instability, and difficulties in securing stabilization, complications are frequent.
