Extraarticular fracture of the proximal end segment

Definition

Extraarticular fractures of a metacarpal base are classified by the AO/OTA as 77.2–5.1A, where 2–5 indicates which metacarpal is injured.

The fracture pattern may be transverse, oblique, or multifragmentary.

According to the incidence, the base of the 5th metacarpal is the most often fractured.

Fractures of the 5th metacarpal base may be associated with a dislocation of the carpometacarpal (CMC) joint.

Imaging

X-ray

AP, lateral, and oblique views should be obtained.
