Oblique extraarticular fracture of the distal end segment

Definition

Oblique metaphyseal fractures of the proximal phalangeal neck are classified according to AO/OTA as 78.2–5.1.3A, where 2–5 indicates which finger is injured.

Obliquity of the fracture is possible either in the plane visible in the AP view or the plane visible in the lateral view. Always confirm the fracture configuration with views in both planes.

These oblique fractures will likely be unstable after reduction, especially long ones.

Imaging

Long oblique/spiral fractures can occur with the obliquity visible either in an AP or lateral view x-ray.
