Extraarticular, simple transverse fracture

Definition

Simple transverse fractures of the distal humeral metaphysis are classified by the AO/OTA as 13A2.3.

Extraarticular, simple transverse fracture

Further characteristics

The typical patient with this fracture is an elderly woman with osteoporotic bone. Articular involvement may be present but may not be obvious on the initial x-rays. Further assessment by CT scan is recommended.

These fractures may be difficult to stabilize with internal fixation when the fracture is very low because of poor distal bone stock.

X-ray

This example shows a very distal transcondylar extraarticular distal humerus fracture.
