Simple transverse fractures of the distal humeral metaphysis are classified by the AO/OTA as 13A2.3.
The typical patient with this fracture is an elderly woman with osteoporotic bone. Articular involvement may be present but may not be obvious on the initial x-rays. Further assessment by CT scan is recommended.
These fractures may be difficult to stabilize with internal fixation when the fracture is very low because of poor distal bone stock.
