Angle - simple

Unilateral angle fracture

Definition

The simple unilateral mandibular angle fracture is one of the most common mandible fractures. It is usually the result of interpersonal violence with a blow to the side of the face. It is more commonly located on the left side.

They occur in isolation but are more commonly associated with a contralateral fracture of the body or symphysis.

These fractures involve the inferior alveolar canal, routinely causing numbness to the lip and chin on the injured side.

Most angle fractures involve the socket of the third molar tooth when present.

Angle fractures also have the highest rate of postoperative complications of all mandible fractures.

Bilateral angle fracture

Definition

Bilateral fractures of the mandibular angle are rare. They typically cause an anterior open bite malocclusion and are usually the result of interpersonal violence.

These fractures involve the inferior alveolar canal, routinely causing numbness to the lip and chin on the injured side.

Most angle fractures involve the socket of the third molar tooth when present.

Angle fractures also have the highest rate of postoperative complications of all mandible fractures.

Images

This panoramic radiograph shows bilateral angle fractures. The fracture on the right is a complete, linear, moderately displaced fracture and may or may not involve the terminal molar's periodontal ligament.

The fracture on the left is a complete, linear, moderately displaced fracture through an edentulous area.

These fractures may or may or not be open to the oral cavity (compound).
