Lateral mandible and skin

The mandibular defect may extend from the subcondylar region to the midline of the symphysis. There should be adequate bone proximally to allow the placement of at least two fixation screws in a bone plate (if used).

This defect typically results from resection of squamous cell carcinoma, sarcomas or osteoradionecrosis.

This bony defect is usually associated with mucosal defects extending from the floor of mouth into the retromolar trigone, with possible extension into the lateral tongue.
