These defects can involve a small portion the calvarium or can be extensive crossing over the sagittal sinus to the contralateral side. They can be partial thickness and involve the outer table or full thickness resulting in exposure of the dura.

This typically results from the resection of a malignancy that originates in the scalp and invades the calvarium.
