5th, base, metaphyseal avulsion fractures

Mechanism of injury

Inversion ankle or foot injury, often landing from a jump or rolling foot on uneven ground.



Conventional weight bearing radiographs of the foot. AP and lateral oblique views are sufficient for diagnosis and treatment.

Clinical signs

The clinical picture includes swelling, ecchymosis, and pain over the base of the fifth metatarsal.
